Mailing Lists
As one of the largest clubs in the union, UBUC has come to rely very heavily on the use of email, both to organise training and diving trips. For this reason new members are strongly urged to subscribe to the appropriate diving club mailing list as soon as possible.
The Underwater Club has four mailing lists, which are independent of each other.
bris-ubuc-committee@bristol.ac.uk
This list should be your first port of call for questions. If the committee can not help they will direct you to someone who can. By emailing the committee first the load on the mail list is reduced.
bris-ubuc@bristol.ac.uk
This mailing list goes out to the whole club. All emails are moderated to keep posts on subject and save the club from all the spam that gets sent to this address. During term time a weekly update email is compiled by the President, so smaller items can be sent for inclusion then.
bris-ubuc-training@bristol.ac.uk
For club members who are currently doing pool training and lectures. All emails are moderated to keep posts on subject.
bris-ubuc-instructors@bristol.ac.uk
Instructor's discussion list. It can only be posted to by members of the list and is not moderated.
How to Subscribe
When you join the club you will automatically be enrolled on the main list and the training list if necessary. If you did not have your email address to hand when you signed up or wish to change the address, send a message to majordomo@bristol.ac.uk, containing the following line in the message body:
subscribe bris-ubuc
AND/OR
subscribe bris-ubuc-training
New subscriptions are checked, then assuming you are eligible you will be added to the list.
Please be aware the mailing lists DO NOT LIKE HOTMAIL ADDRESSES. If you subscribe using a hotmail account you may miss out on emails as they sporadically get bounced.
Sending Email to the Club
If you want to email the whole club send it to bris-ubuc@bristol.ac.uk. Your message will languish in email limbo until it has been approved by one of the list moderators, so there will be a delay before it is sent out. The message should be sent out within a day, but if all the moderators have gone diving for the weekend the delay will be longer.
The mailing list only understands plain text and doesn't like special characters. If you write your message using formatted text your email will arrive at the moderators' computers looking like gibberish and will be rejected. The pound sign (£) is often replaced by =A3; if you write 'the trip will cost £12' it will arrive as 'the trip will cost =A312'. This causes endless confusion so please avoid using it. Similarly, quotation marks are often mangled but plain apostrophes are usually okay.
