PRM - Organiser Info
(There is an edited version of this information for Students here)
The PRM is part of the Dive Leader course or can be done as an SDC.
PRM as part of Dive Leader training
Do not need to order separate notes as they are included in the DL lecture notes. The theory has been covered in the DL lectures. This session is equivalent to DT9, 10, 11 and DO5. The lead instructor needs to be an NQI and have assisted on a PRM before.
Organising PRM as an SDC
Need to order SDC notes and register it with BSAC HQ. Need to put on separate theory sessions. The lead Instructor needs to be NQI and have assisted on a PRM before.
Advertise to club via email minimum of 4 weeks before. It’s a good idea to advertise it to the instructors first and see what response you get then advertise it to the whole club. Make sure people know that they need to bring their suits and basic kit. You will need at least a ratio of 1:4 of instructors to students. The more instructors, the better. All dive leader trainees need to attend a PRM session. Make sure all the instructors attending have read the Dive leader section of the instructor’s manual about PRM or if doing an SDC the instructor notes.
You will need to define at the start of each scenario if the instructors and helpers can be used during the exercise or if they are just observing this will save confusion. You will need to inform the DO and EO of the course so that the trip can be registered and it is know that kit is to be used.
What you will need to take:
- Suits + basic kit
- One set of Scuba Kit each it should be as real a scenario as possible
- First Aid box
- O2 sets both boat (brown tubes) and shore (large O2 bottle and reg in ammunition box). One brown O2 set contains:
- Cylinder of O2 (spare cylinders are in grey tubes)
- O2 reg
- Adaptor and tube for free flow face mask
- Two masks (constant flow and demand)
- Laminated neuro exam
- Ropes, buoys and anchor
- Shore pack
- Rescue for divers manual (helpful to have about)
- DL open water instructor notes (preferably laminated photocopies)
- Tarpauline (stored in boat shed) to keep kit off manky wood floor
Location:
There are various locations that can be considered. Abbots pond in Abbots Leigh has been a favourite over the past few years but other sites can be used. All of the sites are out of Bristol so you will need to organise transport. You end up taking soooo much kit that it is the same as a dive trip just bare that in mind.
Timing:
Timing all depends on when instructors can make it, as you need as many as possible about. Any time of year is cool although Abbots pond in a semi in December is not fun but it is do-able. The course will take a full day including travel the actual course runs for around about 4hrs.
Debriefing is much better in the pub, there is a really good one on the corner on the main road through Abbots Leigh. It does great food but it stops serving at 3.30 so make sure you get there early. You will use O2 so make sure you inform the EO and DO so that they can be refilled, also report any faults with the kit.
