UBUC ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 8th MAY**************
Hi All,
The eagle-eyed among you will have noticed on the website that the most important meeting of the year, UBUC Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday 8th May at 7pm upstairs in the Lansdowne pub.
This is your opportunity to have your say about how the club should be run and by whom! On the night there will be a review of the past year, The chance to propose and vote on any constitutional changes and most importantly run for a position on the committee!
Anyone can run for a committee position, have a look at the job descriptions at: Http://www.ubuc.info/c/l/u/Club_Committee_6a00.html then get in contact with the relevant committee member and speak to them about it. At the AGM you will need a proposer and a seconder (both members of the club). You may run for more than one position providing you have not already got one. (eg: you could stand for each post until you are successful).
If you would like to propose a motion, you must send it to me by Thursday 24th April. This will be viewed by the club before the AGM and can only be passed with a two-thirds majority vote at the AGM.
So put it in your diary and I shall remind you nearer the time!
Hope to see you all there,
Craig

POOL SESSIONS*****************************************
Even though we have finished our formal training programme we will still pool sessions in the Summer term which are great for trying out new toys, practising rusty skills or just having a bit of fun.
Currently I am waiting for confirmation of our pool times for the summer term but expect an e-mail in the next few days.

UBUC AND NAUTICAL ARCHAEOLOGY SOCIETY***********
Hi All
At PK I discovered that there is a number of students interested in, or studying underwater archaeology.
In the past UBUC has organised for members of the Nautical Archaeology Society (http://www.nasportsmouth.org.uk/index.php) to come and run courses for our members.
Those members then went as a group with club boats and equipment to take part on projects such SOLMAP organised by the Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime archaeology http://www.hwtma.org.uk/projects/solmap/index.htm (a couple of the boats in this picture might now look familiar). This was a regular thing over a period of about 5 years, but hasn't happened for several years now.
A lot of fun was had on these expeditions; we surveyed timbers from old sailing boats. We took core samples of the sea bed and with a little help from excavating lobsters we found flint worked by Neolithic man. Results from these studies were written up by the professional archaeologists organising the trip.
By "UBUC has organised" what I mean is that in the past there has been a member or members who wanted to do such things, who went about seeking out the opportunities. They got others interested and pushed the project to make it happen. The reason it hasn't happened for several years now is mostly that there have been no members sufficiently interested to take up the mantle and make it happen.
I do not know what opportunities are currently possible but what I do know is that the very first line of our club constitution reads:
"The aims and objects of the Club shall be to provide for its members facilities, opportunity and training for underwater exploration, science, and sport .."
If you have a desire to further any aspect of underwater exploration, science or sport you should have the confidence to make your interest known and maybe you only need something that other club members can help you with to make your desire a reality.
Cheers

WRECK APPREICATION COURSE**************************
BSAC Wreck Appreciation Course: Portland, Dorset 31st May - 1st June 2008
The British Sub Aqua Club and the Nautical Archaeology Society are combining to do the new Wreck Appreciation Course at Portland on May31st-June 1st. This course is great fun and concentrates on wrecks and how to identify important features. The diving is suitable for Ocean Divers and above as the course is primarily designed for divers new to wreck diving, or those who would like to learn more about the wrecks they dive. You do not have to be a member of the Nautical Archaeology Society, but if you are, or decide to join, then completion of this course will give you six points towards the NAS Part 3 certificate. If you are an experienced diver, would like to develop your skill level, and perhaps find out different ways of enjoying going diving then this course is also for you.
The course costs £64-00 for the two days. For this you get two boat dives and all your tuition, plus tea/coffee and biscuits. On top of that you will need to pay your £16-00 registration fee making a total of £80-00. This registration fee also includes your information packs and student notes.
This is a fantastic opportunity for you to spend two days learning some real skills that will help you to enjoy your diving even more than you do now.
The Nautical Archaeology Society are handling applications so if you would like a place then please contact mark@nauticalarchaeologysociety.org and copy in
jane.maddocks@bsac.com

DDRC DIVING SURVEY***********************************
Diving Diseases Research Centre (DDRC) and the University of Plymouth have
just completed a new website concerned with research into aspects of
recreational scuba diving. ScubaStudy.org has been designed primarily to
collect data from a UK-wide population of divers in order to compare this
information with non-diving sample populations and also worldwide
populations of divers.
**Long term diving study** The current online study is looking to recruit
divers with more than 20 years experience to take part in a simple 10 minute
questionnaire looking to determine if there are any perceived differences
between long-term divers and novice or even non-divers.
ScubaStudy.org is a website which has been developed and is being used as
part of a PhD Research Degree program at the University of Plymouth, funded
by the DDRC and Great Western Research. The principal researcher is Graham
Samson; a keen diving instructor and graduate of the University of Stirling.
Graham can be contacted at graham@scubastudy.org (alternative for
correspondence: graham.samson@plymouth.ac.uk ). This research aims to
differentiate itself from previous studies in that it focuses primarily on
recreational divers rather than commercial or military samples.
I hope that you can lend your support to this new project, I am more than
happy to answer any queries or provide further information that you may
require

BOAT TRIP TO PLYMOUTH 26/27TH APRIL******************
Hi guys,
I'm organising a trip to Plymouth for the weekend of the 26th/27th April. This is open to all qualified divers (subject to DO approval) and the plan is to launch out of Fort Bovisand and dive the HMS Scylla and the James Eagan Layne. Both these wrecks are about 20m deep and for anyone who doesn't know them; the scylla is a frigate sunk in 2004 and is intact and sat upright on the seabed. The JEL is a WW2 wreck and is one of the countrys most popular sites.
James Eagan Layne wreck tour:
http://www.divernet.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?id=1475&sc=1026&ac=d&an=1475:Wreck+Tour:+62,+The+James+Eagan+Lay
Scylla tour:
http://www.divernet.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?id=1395&sc=1026&ac=d&an=1395:Wreck+Tour:+64,+HMS+Scylla

TRIP REPORT
BABBACOME 12TH APRIL*********************************
6 divers met at stores at a civilised 9am on Saturday morning (Dougal, Andy K, Mike S, Chris O, Jonny T and Elena C) and then headed down to Torquay picking up Amy on route. It was a bit of a bleak start to the day, but just as Dougal predicted the rain stopped and it turned into a brilliant calm sunny day. Andy and Mike started the day with some twin set diving and did a very interesting sweep of the bay thanks to Mikes wooden compass. The Cuttlefish are back in the Bay and unfortunately so are the traps! If any one is unfamiliar with Cuttlefish they are amazing squid like creatures that can camouflage them selves with their surroundings and are very intelligent. Then Amy and Jonny went for a dive together and Dougal, Chris and Elena did a speedy dive round the bay and there were more cuttlefish sightings as well as rumours that one might have been liberated. In between these dives there was a sighting of a seal in the bay. After more diving, the seal returned and swam into the shallows and even went to sit on the steps of the quay. The three very fortunate divers in the water at the time (Dougal, Amy and Chris O) came literally face to face with it which lasted about 10 minutes. To the amusement of Mike and Jonny I got kitted up jumped into the water to snorkel with my camera seconds after the seal vanished. Then after biscuits and chocolate it was back to Bristol.
