4. OXYGEN ADMINISTRATION*******************************************

Next week I have booked MR6small for Wednesday (7th Nov) and Thursday (8th Nov) between 6-9pm for the O2 admin course. I realize that this will make it a rather dive leader-tastic week for you guys. I apologise for this but the union has very limited numbers of rooms available this term which is making organizing stuff at short notice a bit of a nightmare.

If you absolutely cannot make these dates please email me. The Thursday session will be more of an assessment session, while the Wednesday session is where the theory will be covered.

If only a couple of people cant make it I will carry on with the course regardless, but if many people cant make it I will just do the theory session on one of the evenings and we can do the assessments another time.

Cheers,
Piers (pb4356@bristol.ac.uk)

KIT:

1. KIT SALE SIZES**************************************************

Hey All

I understand that some of you who bought kit through the kit sale have had trouble with sizing. If this is still the case and you haven't gone directly to Bristol channel divers and had it sorted out - please email me with the sizing error and new size etc.

I know some of you have not got hold of basic pool kit. You will need to get this as soon as possible. This can be bought from any one of a number of dive stores in Bristol or online. Just do a simple google search remembering some stores are cheaper than others. You need:

Dive Boots,
Dive Fins,
Mask,
Snorkle

Try to get hold of this asap for pool training,

If you have any further questions give me an email,

Regards,

Mike (Equipment Officer) (mt5195@bristol.ac.uk)

NOTICES:

1. SUMMER EXPEDITION TO THE ISLES OF SCILLY************************

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to organise a diving expedition to the Isles of Scilly next summer (Probably end of August/Start of September). These are a group of islands several miles off lands end with hundreds of shipwrecks and lots of reefs. For anyone not familiar with the diving here, just speak to anyone who was onboard the Joseph this summer and you will hear tales of huge lobsters, playing with groups of seals and wrecks dives with fantastic viz.

Here's a taster of the diving on offer:

Plympton & Hathor:
http://www.divernet.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?id=6089&sc=1026&ac=d&an=6089:+WRECKTOUR:100+The+Hathor+&+Plympto...

Cita:
http://www.divernet.com/cgi-bin/articles.pl?id=1037&sc=&ac=d&an=

The plan is still in the initial stages, but will involve shipping over the club boats and mobile compressor on a crate in the scillionian. We will be camping on St Agnes and diving around the south side of St Marys and St Agnes and the western rocks. Depending on interest, the intention will probably be to run the trip over two weeks with the option for people to come along for one week and swap over in the middle.

Due to the depths of most of the sites this trip will be for Sports Divers and above (subject to DO approval). The finances havn't been calculated yet, but I would expect a week to cost in the region of £340 (including everything except booze) with £160 of this being a deposit payable before christmas. At this stage I would just like replies from people who might
be interested so I can gather a general consensus. I don't expect anyone to commit just yet. Once I know the level of interest I will put together a more detailed proposal. If anyone would like further information on the diving then you can find me after training on Tuesdays and Fridays or send me an email.

thanks,
Andy Kiddier

2. RECALL OF OCEANIC REGULATORS*************************************

We have just been notified by Oceanic that they have issued a voluntary recall of their DX (diaphragm) type Regulator First Stages, the CDX5 and the FDX10. There is a problem with the HP seat which can be fixed by bringing it back to Dive Machine or another Oceanic Dealer or Service Centre.

Also if you have had your Oceanic Regulator DX4, DX3, CDX, CDX5, FDX10 or TDX5 serviced between May 1st 2006 and October 22nd 2007 should also bring your regulator back in to be checked.

The safety recall advises that potentially affected regs should NOT be used until they have been checked.

There is a database to check the serial numbers of possibly affected new regulators at www.oceanicworldwide.com *******************************************************************

The last chance for Lyme Bay Reefs?
DEFRA is consulting on options to protect marine biodiversity interests
in Lyme Bay. The Wildlife Trusts will be responding - calling for
statutory protection of all of the Lyme Bay Reefs - 60 square miles,
less than 10% of Lyme Bay.

Why?
Lyme Bay Reefs support rich and varied biological communities
of national importance. Scallop dredging destroys both seabed species and the habitats on which they depend. Species can recover, provided that disturbance to habitat is not too extreme. There is an urgent need to protect the reef habitats of Lyme Bay to prevent further damage and allow recovery of seabed communities.

Not just wildlife...
Diving, potting and sea angling are all activities that take place in Lyme Bay, each relies on healthy reefs for their future. All can be carried out without damaging reef habitats The economic value of the sustainable use of Lyme Bay Reefs to local communities is double that of scallop dredging.

More seabed destruction - or a sustainable future for the Lyme Bay
Reefs? It's a simple choice. You can find the consultation document on the Defra website:
http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/lymebay-biodiversity/index.htm
<http://www.defra.gov.uk/corporate/consult/lymebay-biodiversity/index.ht
m

The deadline for comments is 7th December 2007. Unfortunately the documentation does not include key information gathered by The Wildlife Trusts since August 2006 which is relevant to the consultation. This new data on the distribution of pink sea fans the Homarus report on the economics of Lyme Bay Reefs mentioned in the consultation, but not included in the supporting information, and a report summarising 16 years of work on Lyme Bay Reefs can be found at:
http://www.savelymebayreefs.org <http://www.savelymebayreefs.org>=20

Together with further information about how The Wildlife Trusts is
responding.

EVENTS:

1. GET F***ED FOR FITZ PARTY 9th NOV********************************

Hi all

Below is an e-mail from the Canoe Club about their annual party, Get F***ed For Fitz! It's a great night and well worth coming along to. I have tickets if anyone want to buy them and I believe Alex will be organising some kind of Pre-party drinks for anyone who is going.

See you there
Craig

Hello!

This is an email to tell you about the Bristol University Canoe Club's
forthcoming party...

Get F***ed For Fitz!

What is it?

It's a big party and celebration in memory of Jon Fitzsimmons, a dedicated
member of the club who tragically died out in the Alps in July 2003. The
Canoe Club set up a memorial fund where money raised at GFFF is collected,
and is then put towards sending people on safety courses and buying safety
equipment for the club, to help prevent a similar thing happening again.

The details?

Venue: Slug & Lettuce (St. Nicholas Street, BS1 1UB)
Date: Friday 9th November
Time: 9pm onwards
Map:
http://www.slugandlettuce.co.uk/bristol/about/where_to_find_us_and_how_to_c
ontact_us/

Tickets cost £4 and can bought on the door, from any Canoe Club committee
member including myself (George Cave - gc6480@bristol.ac.uk). If you would
like any then please email me or give me a call on 07931 299964.

In addition, there will be an awesome raffle with amazing prizes coming in
from paddling companies, restaurants and many other places. Last year we
had prizes such as buoyancy aids, kayakojacko lessons, restaurant tickets,
crates of beer, t-shirts and lots more. A good excuse to spend some money
for a good cause!

It's always an amazing night and a great chance for all the extreme sports
clubs to get together. Please come down and support us and bring all your
friends as well - its a completely open invite!

So remember ... tickets cost £4. It's a brilliant night, in memory of an
amazing guy, and a chance to raise lots of money for a good cause. All the
money goes straight back into promoting safety within the Canoe Club. No
excuses for not coming!
