UBUC AGM Minutes 2002

Proposals The club AGM is to be held on Wed 8th May at 7pm in the White Harte. If you wish to know more about any of the committee posts check out the web site. If you wish to stand for a post can you let me know before this date if at all possible, otherwise it can be sorted on the night, at vicky_paynter@hotmail.com

Motions 1 and 2 are from Panos Lianos P.U.Lianos@bristol.ac.uk and Sarah De La Rue sarah_dlr@yahoo.co.uk

Motion 1 As an addition to the committee, we propose an additional position of ADVANCED SNORKELLING OFFICER in line with the BSAC snorkelling training scheme. They would be responsible for people who wish to do snorkel training in the pool to improve their underwater technique and confidence. Due to the level of responsibility for safety, candidates must be seconded by the DO and the previous incumbent.

Motion 2

We propose the formalisation of the membership fee for those who wish to do only snorkelling activities and participate in snorkelling trips. These individuals will pay a lower fee, in line with club membership but with consideration to the fact that they do not use aqualungs.

Justification for Motion 1

The role of the Advanced Snorkelling Officer would be to guide snorkelling procedures in the pool. This would involve several levels of responsibility, foremost of which would be to produce guidelines for the safety of these activities. In addition to this they would be responsible for developing exercises for scuba-divers when they have no kit aimed at improving underwater confidence and snorkelling ability. This would result in better divers with improved confidence in out of air situations, more relaxed and with improved fining technique and therefore lower air consumption. Sarah De La Rue: "As EO I have particularly discovered the need for this as many instructors do not value time spent with only basic kit, either telling their trainees that there is no value in their turning up, or hanging around like vultures for any unclaimed kit".

Justification for Motion 2 This is, in fact, what has happened already this year, with snorkellers paying £15 ie the equivalent of the membership fee less the air bill. We would just like to formalise it such that future committees will take snorkellers into consideration and set them an appropriate membership fee.

What Actually Happened This is a brief summary of the UBUC AGM which occured last Thursday at the White Hart. The evening began with the committee giving their report on the club's many achievements over the year. The two motions that were proposed this year were then voted on:

Motion 1 "As an addition to the committee, we propose an additional position of ADVANCED SNORKELLING OFFICER in line with the BSAC snorkelling training scheme. They would be responsible for people who wish to do snorkel training in the pool to improve their underwater technique and confidence. Due to the level of responsibility for safety, candidates must be seconded by the DO and the previous incumbent."

The motion was DEFEATED

Motion 2 "We propose the formalisation of the membership fee for those who wish to do only snorkelling activities and participate in snorkelling trips. These individuals will pay a lower fee, in line with club membership but with consideration to the fact that they do not use aqualungs."

The motion was PASSED At this point a brief pause was taken, for me and many members of the club to stock up at the bar with as much as they could carry. To follow was the elections for committee positions. This year several positions were very closely contested. Anyway the results of the elections and your dream team for the year are:

President - Paul Dorrell Diving Officer - Rob Gibbs Training Officer - Stuart Rundle Vice President - Scott Taylor Equipment Officer - Toni Edge Boats Officer - Chris Steltz Secretary - Polly Whyte Treasurer - Rosemary Mellor Special Interests Officer - Kate Fleming

Then came the turn of the more light-hearted UBUC awards, some of the awards given this year including: most expensive committee member (Alex I) and most amusing e-mail (Julia - last time it gets mentioned, honest). This brought a close to the 2002 AGM, but there was still the annual trip to the lizard lounge, as usual served up with lashings of red bull and scandal.....

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who turned up making it a resounding success. I would also like to thank the previous years' committee for all their accomplishments, something which i hope this committee will build on over the forthcoming year.

Cheers, Paul
