UBUC AGM Minutes 2004

1)Members of the Committee present - Rosemary, Stu, Bex, Demleza, Ben, Pete, Jo

Apologies for absence - Amit, Scotty

2) The meeting commenceed with each committee member giving a brief run down of the years achievements and news.

PRESIDENT - ROSEMARY Rosemary feels that the year has been successful, even if perhaps the only measure is the lack of complaints, and she thanked the rest of the committee for their hard work A continuous job has been the monitoring of the union pool, which will almost definitely disappear along with the union in the next 7-10 years. There has been no proposed replacement, although it will almost definitely not be located with the new union. From the point of view of the underwater club, not only do we need a pool, but we need one sufficiently deep enough for training and somewhere close to it to store kit. We may in the future see a clamp down by athletic union on the number of non student members. Non students shouldn't make up more than 25% of the clubs total members, which currently they do. It could be easily argued that the majority of our non student members play a vital role in the club especially with training; something for the new president to look forward to!

VICE PRESIDENT - PETE Pete thanked everyone for making an effort to turn up to the socials especially the Christmas meal which was well attended and a great laugh. He has really enjoyed organising the events getting to know all the new members.

TREASURER - JO This year we have seen many changes to the organisation of the club, which has levitated financial problems that we have had in the past. The introduction of the new database (thanks to Dave) has enabled us to keep track of all members, those who have and haven't paid. She has kept a close eye on all trips using the vans and boats to ensured we have not been under funded in these areas. The discovery of uncashed cheques from previous union grants and extra grants this year to cover new kit has brought the club account to a healthy balance and has even allowed us to keep a reserve to one side in case of emergencies. Following the EGM in the autumn term I have made changes to accounting procedures which should help to better assess the annual income and expenditure in future years.

SECRETARY - AMIT Although his my main job was taking the minutes of meetings (apart from this one!) he has also been involved in organising the club t-shirt competition which was great fun. He has really enjoyed working with all the other committee members this year

TRAINING OFFICER - DEMELZA Demelza thanked all the instructors and assistants' hard work this year with training. This is the first year in which the training has been split between the Training officer and Extended Training Officer. Which she feels has worked very well. Thanks, I've had an enjoyable year as training officer.

EXTENDED TRAINING OFFICER - BECCY Dive leader and Advanced Diver training has gone well the new role of extended training officer has enabled her to spend more time on these diver grades. Thanks to everyone who helped with lectures and practicals!! In addition there has been a number of SDC's organised to further training and relevant Special Interest courses. Instructor training. A number of UBUC members completed TIES, OWIC's and PIES. UBUC has several new PI'S TI's and OWIs as a result! Well done guys!

EQUIPMENT OFFICER - BEN Ben gave a brief run down on the kit status this year, in particular noting the extra cost of servicing due to a large number of the contents gauges not reading correctly, and the fixing of the new kit bought from Go Dive last year.

DIVING OFFICER - STU As the most successful in terms of numbers (56 on the middle weekend) for a few years, the Skomer trip 2003 set the scene for a good year in the club. One that really has seen the club dive the length and breadth of the British Isles from the Orkneys to Lands end.

Next up was the summer expedition 2003 to the Summer Isles off Western Scotland. It was here that we unfortunately experienced the first of two potentially serious incidents of the year involving one of our divers and suspected DCI. Fortunately, the level of training and professionalism that many on the trip possessed resulted in prompt action and the diver recovered completely.

Again in the summer the next big trip involved some our number making the trek to Scapa Flow for what was reported to be an awesome weeks diving, and one that I for one am disappointed that I had to miss.

On to Mull, and the end of the summer was in sight, but not before the potential loss of a boat. Those involved in this episode still seem reluctant to tell me exactly what happened, but I gather it involved being told that one of our boats was adrift by the owner of the campsite! A lesson that diving trips should never have lunch breaks if ever there was one?

With the summer over it was time to start thinking about FRESH and the training schedule for the coming academic year.

The creation of the new post of Extended Training Officer proved itself to be a good move from the off as the OD and Dive Leader courses, I think, were run to a standard that was not possible before.

Thank you to all those who have helped out with lectures, pool training and CPR teaching over the last eight months.

Along side the training, the diving didn't stop. About 30 of us made our way through the fog to PK for the annual PK autumn trip - got some diving in and of course had a good time, new members and old.

Toward the end of last term training in open water got underway for all levels, with a trips for both DL trainees and OD/SD trainees to Meads Foot in Torquay followed, of course by the focus of the year for many, PK proper.

This year, a total of 47 of us including 20 trainees and new crossovers made it along to South Cornwall. All went well despite the best efforts of the weather, save for a small incident involving the cold during rescue skills teaching (again, the high standard of training of those around was evident in avoiding something more serious).

I hope everyone had a good time at PK, I know I did and the feedback we have had has been great. Thanks again to all those who came and made it such a good one.

During Easter, at Lands End we had our second serious incident of the year involving DCI. The details of which I will release when reporting is complete.

My year as DO was rounded off by a fantastic 'mini PK' to Babbacombe last weekend when Bex managed to get 21 divers down south again, diving Bretagn, Galicia and off the shore. A feat of organisation, I think you'll agree that will stand her well in any future role she may wish to persue.

So to the facts: This year we have had?

146 members
51 in the pool
38 in the open water
17 co to OD and 14 OD from beginner
9 new SD of which 6 are crossed over
9 new DL of which 8 are crossed over
3 new AD
Instructors: 3 new OWI and many more IFC's, PIE's
and TIE's
No of Dives: 2301?? 44 per week?. 6 per day
